The NSPCC is the leading charity in the UK and Channel Islands fighting to end child abuse. We do this by delivering vital services that protect children, prevent abuse, and transform society. One key part of this is our work safeguarding the mental and emotional wellbeing of our young people. New figures obtained from NHS trusts in England have shown that more than 100,000 children referred to local specialist NHS mental health services have been rejected for treatment in the last 2 years – equivalent to an average of 150 every day. However, mental and emotional health is now the most common reason for a child to contact Childline, our phone line open to young people 24hrs 7 days a week. In 2016/17 record numbers of children contacted the service about suicidal feelings and we delivered 63,622 counselling sessions. We are now calling on Government to shift the focus of children’s mental health services towards early intervention, to ensure that young people do not have to reach crisis point before receiving the care and support they need.
We are proud to be coming together with Unfiltered Society to raise awareness of mental health and emotional wellbeing, and to help keep children safe. The profits from just one of the children’s jumpers could pay for one of our trained volunteer counsellors to answer a child’s call for help.
